RAM History
RAM was established as a division of Chrysler in 2010, as a Dodge spin-off. Chrysler stated that the RAM trucks would concentrate on "real truck customers", rather than casual truck buyers who would buy trucks for image or style. Following Chrysler's acquisition by Italian automaker Fiat, the RAM brand was created and the plans called for Dodge to switch to an exclusively car-based lineup with all pickup and future heavy-duty trucks to be sold under the RAM brand name.
The name RAM was first used in the 1981 model year following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D Series pickup trucks, as well as the B-series vans. After 1982, the "Club Cab '' was dropped from the lineup, but Dodge decided to keep the tooling and reintroduce it almost a decade later in the 1990 models. Also dropped were the four-door crew cab and Utiline beds after the 1985 model year, making room on the assembly line for the upcoming 1987 Dodge Dakota. Replacing the previous "miser" trim level was the Basic RAM 100 model in 1984.
Due to the introduction and sales success of the Dodge Dakota pickup, the RAM 100 model designation was dropped and these models folded back into the 150 range for 1990. For the 1991-1993 models, Dodge reintroduced the Club Cab, which was equipped with fold-out jump seats. In 1991, the grille was redesigned but the large rectangular headlamps and crossbar were kept. The engines for RAM have substantially upgraded for 1992-1994 models with multi-purpose fuel injection, higher-compression cylinder heads, and new manifolds.
In late 2000, a six-speed manual transmission was made optional for the diesel models, and heated seats were also offered as an option for 2000 models. Although Dodge introduced a new RAM 1500 for 2002, the old second-generation style RAM was carried over for the 2002 model year heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 trucks. The new generation RAM would not appear until 2003.
RAM trucks became available in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, Europe, and the Middle East as of 2016. In 2019 the RAM 1500 pick-up truck offered just seven trim levels, compared to the previous 11 trim levels. RAM 1500 saw increases in capability for the 2019 model year with an increased payload of 2,300 pounds.
