Navistar International Corporation, formerly referred to as International Harvester Company is America's leading manufacturer of heavy- and medium-duty diesel trucks. The company started in the late 1800s with McCormick Harvesting and Cyrus McCormick Company. And in 1889, it built its first gasoline engine. McCormick Harvesting Company partnered with four other companies to create International Harvester after the turn of the century. Thus, the company started experimenting with diesel engines in 1916 as their business continued to improve.
The D-40, a pre-combustion, four-cycle 4-3/4 x 6-1/2 overhead-valve, four-cylinder, full diesel engine, the company's first diesel engine, was built in 1933 for tractor use. The following three years saw the company introducing D-80, its first six-cylinder diesel engine for production. One year later, the company produced the first diesel-powered truck in 1937.
The 1940s saw International Harvester reporting $275 million sales and built its one-millionth truck in 1941. The company shifted its production to military applications to support World War II until around 1945. International Harvester started building diesel engines by purchasing Melrose Park Works, operated by the General Motors Buick Division and developed by the US Defense Plant Corporation.
International Harvester evolved to become a diversified manufacturer within the construction and agricultural industries over the next three-quarters of the 20th century. The company built vehicles ranging from heavy commercial buses and trucks to the Travelall and Scout light trucks. Cub Cadet and Farmall are the other brands connected to the company.

When International Harvester transitioned to Navistar in 1986, the company took the 'Harvester' out of its brand. Some of the International models include severe-service, medium-duty trucks, and over-the-road trucks.

IC Bus (From 2002 to Present)
International prides itself in an extensive history of the school bus market as a chassis provider, as far back as when school vehicles became motorized. Thus, Navistar acquired Ward Body Works, an Arkansas corporation called AmTran, and started body manufacturing in 1933. IC Bus has built quite a few commercial buses and full-sized school bus models.
