The First and Second Generations (1995-2018)
The Sprinter was first introduced to Europe when it launched. It wasn’t until 2001 that it came to the US. After 2003, the Sprinter was sold under the Dodge name. The second-generation Sprinter was introduced for the 2006 model year in Europe. Professional Van and Light Truck Magazine hailed it the Van of the Year in 2007 and 2008. The Sprinter came to the US in 2007. The cargo model featured two wheelbase options and two roof heights with three lengths. It also came in two weight classes, the 2500 and 3500.
In 2013, the Sprinter received some upgrades. New design elements created a more modern look with a redesigned grille and headlights. More driver assistance features were added, such as lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and collision avoidance. The steering wheel was redesigned, and new upholstery options were added. You also had two engine choices with a 2.1L four-cylinder turbodiesel and a 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel. After the update, you had five choices of body styles:
- Cargo
- Crew
- Passenger
- Minibus
- Cab chassis
You also had the option of three lengths and two wheelbases.
Third Generation (2019-Present)
The current model Sprinter is the third generation. It launched in February of 2018 with the 2019 model year. One of the main changes was the switch to front-wheel drive. It also offers the option of gas or diesel and four body styles: cargo, crew, cab chassis, and passenger van.
More than half of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles are sold for commercial purposes. The versatility of this model shows with the other half, which are used for passenger and recreational purposes. This model is used as a family van, limousine, office van, golf van, and wheelchair-accessible van. The US even uses it as an ambulance vehicle.
The 2019 model of the Sprinter Passenger Van has seating for up to 15 people and plenty of storage space. The electric sliding door makes it easy for passengers to enter and exit. An electric sliding step slides into place whenever the door is activated. Mercedes-Benz added more safety and driver assistance features to the van, such as attention assist to monitor driver behavior and a 360-degree camera for a full view of the van.
The 2020 Sprinter offers more configuration options and the available four-wheel drive system. It provides a maximum towing capacity of 5000 pounds with even more driver assist features. You get up to 21 variations of the cargo van and 10 options with the passenger van. It also provides a best-in-class payload to fit in everything you need.
