How the Alternator Works

The alternator works with the starter or ignition and the battery. When you turn the ignition, it creates energy for the rotor of the alternator to turn. The alternator rotates to create enough voltage to charge the battery. The battery then uses its energy to start the engine. Once the engine is running and you're driving down the road, the alternator still acts as an assistant to help power the radio, lights, and other accessories when needed.

If the alternator is having problems, it won't keep the battery charged. This is often the problem when you have to jump your battery even though it's relatively new. Some vehicles will give you a warning when the alternator is having issues. Other times, you may not know a problem exists until you're left on the side of the road.

Indicators to Have Your Alternator Serviced

Though it may appear that the alternator stops working without warning, it does often leave subtle clues that it's failing.
