Lamborghini is an Italian brand associated with luxury and celebrities. Today it's owned by Volkswagen through Audi, but it has a long history of its own. Best known for luxury sports cars, the company also makes SUV's.

The History of Lamborghini

The company was originally founded in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini. Vehicles produced by the manufacturer had a distinction as real-wheel drive models with a rear mid-engine. The goal was to develop a car that would compete with models like the Ferrari. One of the first models developed by Lamborghini was the 350 GT in the 1960's. The company grew quickly from its inception but slowed during the financial crisis of 1973.

Ownership of the company changed multiple times in the 1970s and 1980s. Chrysler, an American company, took control in 1987 but sold it in 1994 to a Malaysian investment firm. It was sold once again in 1998 to the Volkswagen Group. The company was placed in the Audi division.

Some of the most popular models included the Countach, which was later replaced by the Diablo. The Jalpa and LM002 became well-known in the 1980's. Along with manufacturing cars, the company introduced a motorcycle.

Lamborghini was slow in getting involved with motor sports, but it began developing cars for racing with the P400. The company manufactured cars for BMW and became an engine supplier during the late 1980's and early 1990's for Formula One racing.

After being purchased by Volkswagen, new models were introduced under the Lamborghini brand. In the later 2000's, sales drop almost by half with the global financial crisis.

The company developed several concept cars that never made it to production, including a sedan and a hybrid.

Urus is an SUV line with a V8 engine and all-wheel drive, which has been hailed as the first super sport utility vehicle in the world.

The Limited Series is an exclusive group of vehicles designed for a select number of buyers. They include the Centenario Roadster, the Centenario, and the SIAN FKP 37.

While Lamborghini is based in Italy, it has penetrated several worldwide markets. The U.S. is the biggest market for the brand.
