The Beginnings of the RAM 1500
While some of the basic features of the RAM 1500 were seen in the earlier generation, the name was first introduced with the second generation RAM as a 1500 half-ton. From the start, the 1500 offered both the 6.5-foot and 8-foot boxes. During this time, the truck came with the option of a regular cab, Quad Cab, or Club Cab.
RAM released the third-generation 1500 for the 2002 model year with a major update; the truck got a new frame, powertrain options, suspension, and interiors. Sales increased with these changes, which included rack and pinion steering – a first for the brand. Midway through the generation, the Mega Cab was introduced with seating for six. An in-dash navigation system became an available option while headlights had been updated for a modern look.
It was at this time that RAM separated from Dodge into its own brand and under the umbrella of Chrysler LLC. To stay competitive, the RAM 1500 introduced a new suspension and HEMI engine, a new four-door cab and the popular Rambox cargo management system. In 2013, the 1500 received minor style changes with a new fascia in the front, new halogen headlamps, wheels and interior. The Dodge logo was replaced with RAM. Uconnect 3 infotainment became an option for the 1500, starting in 2013.
Personalized power is found in the 2021 RAM 1500 with your choice of engines. For efficient performance, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 includes an eTorque mild hybrid powertrain, which is a Class-Exclusive. Two HEMI V8 engines promise to impress with their strength while the 3.0L EcoDiesel provides an option for those who prefer diesel power. For the 5.7L HEMI V8, you get 395 horsepower with the 6.2L HEMI V8 provides a jaw-dropping 702 horsepower with 650 lb.-ft. of torque.
Uconnect has expanded to a 12-inch touchscreen for easier control and reading of settings. Thanks to the head-up display, getting information doesn’t have to distract you from driving. Technology for safety is cutting edge with the latest innovative systems such as pedestrian emergency braking to stop when a person crosses your path. Forward collision warning with active braking alerts you to possible accidents and even helps you stop faster to minimize impact. Blind spot monitoring helps you see around your blind spot before switching lanes even if you’re towing a trailer.
As one of the most powerful pickup trucks in the market, the RAM 1500 is built to impress; in fact, the TRX has won the Four Wheeler’s Pickup Truck of the Year award. This truck also takes the Full-Size Pickup Truck of Texas award, among others.
